THE ORIGINS OF THE CHARACTER
How was Jiren the Gray created? How was his personality worked on? This is what we will see first.
First of all, the name Jiren could strongly come from the Japanese word " renji ", which means " stove ". It's a play on words, like we often find in Dragon Ball Z. ☝
Basically, Jiren was supposed to have a much more outspoken personality than in the series. It was the author of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama who opposed this idea. He wanted to create a calm individual with a tragic past. It is amusing to note that in the game Xenoverse 2, we will find a Jiren corresponding to the first idea. 📖
Jiren the Gray arrives in the series from episode 78. He appears as a mysterious, cold and formidable being. Toppo , the leader of the Pride Troopers previously described him as the most powerful being in Universe 11.
APPEARANCE: WHAT DOES JIREN LOOK LIKE?
Jiren is a very tall and very muscular humanoid fighter. His musculature is imposing, especially when he becomes enraged. Its head is rather large, slender, similar to the usual representations of extraterrestrials called the little grays. 👽
Oddly enough, he has short legs compared to the rest of his body. It is very easy to believe that this is a characteristic specific to his breed. He has gray skin, two large round black eyes, with very enlarged pupils. Its ears are flat and circular in shape. Although it has a nose, it is not very visible, it is very discreet. 👂
As for his equipment, Jiren wears the uniform of the Pride Troopers , just like his companions. This set consists of a red and black top cut very close to the body, dark pants, white boots and white gloves.
THE MYSTERIOUS PERSONALITY OF JIREN
As a member of the Pride Troopers, Jiren is a being completely dedicated to justice and categorically refuses to act for selfish reasons. He is fully dedicated to protecting Universe 11. We can see him very well in the series when he announces that if his Universe is threatened during the 48 minutes of the tournament, he will not hesitate to leave the competition. ⏳
Jiren has values, he does not kill his enemies but prefers to capture them. This logic initially makes him refuse to participate in the tournament because it includes the destruction of other universes. He later agrees while listening to Toppo's arguments. At the same time, he intervenes when he deems an event necessary. His behavior in the tournament demonstrates this perfectly. He remains impassive, waiting for much of the competition. However, when Kale goes crazy and unleashes all her power on the arena, he doesn't hesitate to step in and calm her down. He never seems afraid, even against Son Goku Ultra Instinct . Technically, despite being the strongest in his Universe, Jiren is not the commander of the Pride Troopers. Jiren is very respectful of his enemies when they show great combat skills. This is the case for Vegeta and Goku . He recognizes their performances and does not hesitate to express respect for them. Even when Toppo decides to sacrifice his beliefs to become God of Destruction, Jiren clearly doesn't respect his choice. He coldly mocks his superior by calling him pathetic.

He has a common characteristic with Goku, he doesn't like it when an enemy doesn't fight at 100% of his power. Jiren prefers to leave his enemies to himself, he even offers them to use their maximum capacity. Then he counters them without any problem. As a result, he demonstrates extreme confidence in his abilities, bordering on arrogance. After leaving Son Goku defeated and eliminating Hit, he simply decides to retire to meditate, thinking that Universe 11 will inevitably be victorious. 👍
How to explain this personality? Jiren is greatly influenced by the traumatic events of his childhood. This helped develop a sense of arrogance and selfless morality. Remember, Jiren lost many loved ones and was the victim of betrayal. Logically, he therefore has great difficulty trusting someone. During the fight against Goku and Frieza , he will finally realize the power of trust, when two individuals can count on each other in a desperate situation. ✌
However, despite all this coldness, Jiren is sometimes able to feel a little inner joy . This is especially seen when an opponent like Goku develops unparalleled combat power. On several occasions, he smiles and respects his opponent. It is on this occasion that we understand that Jiren cannot envisage defeat, that would be a terrible thing for him. If we have to briefly summarize Jiren's personality, we could say that it is the opposite of Goku 's. Kakarot values his friends and allies and even learns from some training with Krillin who is much weaker than him. His friends are the source of true growth for him. During the fight, when Jiren is technically defeated, his pride and honor push him to recognize the power of friendship.
Jiren has a great sense of honor . He really hesitates to finish off Goku when the latter falls victim to the side effects of Ultra Instinct. It took Belmod 's arguments to convince him to put him out of the ring. He also tells Goku that even if Universe 7 is destroyed, he would live on in his memories forever. We can therefore think that Jiren considers him an equal. Which is understandable because Goku is quite possibly the strongest enemy he's ever faced. 💪
After his defeat against the duo Goku and Frieza, Jiren is smiling when Kakarot asks him for a rematch in the future. This little act must have changed things in Jiren's personality. BIOGRAPHY: THE COMPLETE STORY OF JIREN
A DARK PAST: BETWEEN MASSACRES AND BETRAYALS
Jiren's childhood is tragic . When he was just a child, he found his parents murdered in his own home. He was saved by Gicchin, who later became his martial arts teacher. He took him with him in order to make him progress and improve his power. Jiren was also surrounded by his other students, all young learners.
Later, the same assassin arrives at Gicchin's school and commits a real massacre. The teacher and many students will perish. The few survivors decide to flee and lead a normal life, hiding. Jiren found himself alone, isolated from the others. He still continued to train to become stronger. It was this event that destroyed his relationship with trust. The others had abandoned him. The only thing that mattered to him now was strength. For him, strength is justice. He remained alone for a good part of his life, until he met the Pride Troopers. The god of destruction of his universe, Belmod, then began to take an interest in this very promising fighter. 🤜
In the manga, we learn that Gicchin strongly encouraged Jiren to join the Pride Troopers . After his death, Jiren continued to develop his strength on his own. He failed to understand that what his master wanted was to discover the power of cohesion and teamwork, an important and crucial value among the Pride Troopers. Despite everything, he will do an excellent job as a protector, working for justice throughout his universe. He also refuses to kill his enemies. 👍
Year after year, Jiren gains strength and becomes very powerful. This incredible being was said to have managed to surpass the god of destruction Belmod in power . THE TOURNAMENT OF POWER: JIREN IN DRAGON BALL SUPER
BEFORE THE BATTLE…
Jiren therefore appears for the first time in the saga of the survival of the universe . He is accompanied by the other Pride Troopers, including Captain Toppo . When Jiren appears, he meditates before starting the competition.
Once arrived in the dimension dedicated to the tournament, Jiren and Toppo adopt a very serious aptitude, they know very well what is at stake in this battle royal. When Goku comes to greet Jiren, the latter instantly teleports behind his back, asking him to lose. Our hero didn't see it coming. 😮
Jiren makes a strong impression when he precisely positions himself in a spot that allows him to dodge the cobblestones that rebuild the arena. This fighter appears mysterious and formidable.
LET THE TOURNAMENT BEGIN!
The first fighter to face Jiren is named Rabanra . However he is frightened just by Jiren's cold gaze. Then, the fighter from Universe 11 will just wait patiently. ⌛
Later, when Kale goes on a rampage all over the battlefield, Jiren decides to intervene to calm her down. He masters it in a single attack. He then joins Toppo to wait away from the fury of the fighting, in order to save his strength. 👊
Even later, when Ribrianne unleashes her Light of Love all over the field, Jiren knocks down one of the attacks and was about to stop this technique in its tracks. However, Vegeta was faster.
THE FIRST CLASH BETWEEN GOKU AND JIREN
The God of Destruction Belmod asks Jiren to knock Goku out . This is what the fighter will manage to do without too much difficulty. Goku's attacks are ineffective, even in super saiyan blue kaioken x10. Jiren manages to stop Goku's super kamehameha just by deploying his ki. The hand-to-hand combat then begins and Jiren triumphs very easily, swinging Goku to send him out of the arena. He does not notice that the latter manages to hang on at the last moment. 👎
Goku returns to the charge, still in Kaiken x20 . Jiren inflicts invisible blows on his eye. The attacks are so fast that even Vegeta can't perceive them. Goku therefore decides directly to go all out by beginning an ultimate Genkidama . All the participants of Universe 7 except Vegeta will send him energy in order to help him. The operation takes time but Jiren agrees to wait. When Goku sends the attack at him, Jiren holds out a single hand to stop him, much to everyone's surprise. Goku sends all his strength to push the Genkidama towards his opponent, in vain. Jiren manages with disconcerting ease to repel the attack on Goku, just with his gaze. The energy returns to Goku and implodes. 💥
As the smoke clears, Goku is nowhere to be found and everyone thinks the saiyan has been disintegrated. However, this excess energy actually allowed Goku to achieve Ultra Instinct . He takes the opportunity to confront Jiren again. The two fighters exchange blows with each other. Goku dodges all of Jiren's attacks, without being able to appear truly threatening. Goku's power stops and Jiren takes the opportunity to place a Power Impact, putting an end to this first confrontation.
JIREN VS HIT
Jiren's next important confrontation takes place a few minutes later. He now opposes Hit , the best fighter in Universe 6. The assassin is at first in great difficulty facing Jiren's power and he is unable to find any fault. Jiren openly despises him and will find himself exposed because of this overconfidence. Because Hit has a formidable capacity, he knows how to play with time. He therefore manages to lock Jiren in a temporal ball , thus preventing him from moving normally. Jiren must therefore make a lot of efforts to escape the trap. Hit tries to keep him in the cage as long as possible to put him out of the ring. However, Jiren manages to escape the trap and defeats Hit in the minutes that follow. 😮
Dyspo and Toppo, the other two strongest Pride Troopers come to meet Jiren in order to retreat all three to safety. Jiren eliminated Hit and left Goku in a bad state. He considers the game won and decides to meditate during the remainder of the fight, convinced that the Pride Troopers will triumph over the other universes quite easily. It surrounds itself with a protective barrier, in order to remain safe. It must be admitted that at this moment in the fight, Universe 11 has a real head start over all the others. 🤔
During his meditation, his arm tenses slightly as he feels Kefla's energy. However, this is not enough to intervene. Towards the end of the fight, he begins to move his right eye, when Kefla and Goku are in super saiyan. He definitively finishes his meditation at the moment when Ultra Instinct awakens again in Goku . He stays with Dyspo and Toppo in the background and watches as Universe 7 eliminates 2, 3, 4 and 6 respectively.
The ultimate clash between Universes 7 and 11 is approaching and Jiren is convinced that victory will be easy...
UNIVERSE 7 VERSUS UNIVERSE 11
During the tournament, Vegeta will succeed in surpassing his limits with the Blue Evolution transformation.
Universe 7 begins the fight with numerical superiority. Jiren faces Gok u Super Saiyan Blue at full power. Vegeta joins the battle soon after. Jiren lets him attack without harming him. He only responds when Vegeta provokes him by telling him that he will be the one to obtain the Dragon Balls. The fight rages on and Vegeta will surpass his limits to be able to hold out against this formidable opponent. 👊
Vegeta manages to dodge Jiren's lightning-fast attacks and unleashes a very powerful Final Flash . Jiren commends him for this powerful technique but quickly knocks him out afterwards.
After defeating Vegeta, Jiren tells him to stay down. The fight resumes between Goku and Jiren. New combat techniques are used like landmines and instant teleportation. Goku even uses Krillin's disks to destroy Jiren's platform and knock him out of the ring, to no avail. 💥
Jiren returns to the main platform and charges Goku at full power , ignoring the mines on the way. He attacks Kakarot for several minutes, until the latter is forced to return to normal form, visibly overwhelmed by the power of his opponent. Jiren takes advantage of his advantage to hit him numerous times, until Vegeta returns to challenge him. This will then reach a form never seen before, the ultimate super saiyan blue . The coloring changes slightly to a darker blue, similar to sapphire color. Goku regains his strength and accompanies Vegeta in his Blue form in Kaioken x20. The fight turns into 2vs1 and Jiren notices that his opponents attack much better than before. However, Whis notes that the two saiyans are not really working as a team and are fighting separate battles.
Jiren easily withstands Goku and Vegeta's techniques. The fight will be interrupted by Toppo 's transformation into the god of destruction.
JIREN VS VEGETA
Later, Vegeta will confront Toppo who has become absolutely unstoppable in this new form. The captain of the Pride Troopers wields unprecedented strike power. Vegeta will then decide to create an explosion of enormous power, similar to the one he created during his sacrifice against Big Boo. He unleashes his full power against Toppo and destroys part of the arena, leading the captain to a certain fall. Jiren scolds Toppo for his fall, calling him pathetic. He regrets seeing that his captain abandoned all his beliefs and values to follow this path. Jiren congratulates Vegeta and then decides to show his true power...✨
The champion of Universe 11 unleashes his hidden power and exudes incredible power, never seen before. He is determined to eliminate his four adversaries: Goku, Vegeta, C17 and Frieza. Jiren attacks them and hits them relentlessly with blows of rare violence. C17 manages to surprise him for a moment.
Jiren subdues his opponents one by one. Vegeta is no longer able to transform and relentlessly attacks Jiren, receiving numerous violent blows with each attempt. Vegeta visualizes his family, giving him the strength to get back up again and again. Jiren throws a series of blows at him but the prince of saiyans always gets up. During this event, Jiren will really feel respect for his opponent, Vegeta's last stand is really impressive in his eyes. Jiren then decides to deliver the final blow by knocking him out of the arena. Hope remains however, because shortly before falling from the arena, Vegeta gathers all the rest of his energy and sends it to Goku , in order to give him the strength to get up again. Because let's remember, Kakarot has been stunned for many minutes, unable to do anything. 😵
JIREN VS GOKU ULTRA INSTINCT
The survival of the universe now depends on Goku, as C17 and Frieza have been missing for a while. The saiyan gets up thanks to Vegeta's energy . He reaches Super Saiyan Blue once again. Jiren questions himself and asks Goku why his friends trust him so much, that it is useless. The fight resumes and Goku struggles to put Jiren in difficulty. The champion of Universe 11 delivers a blow of rare violence to Goku, forcing him to return to normal mode. 😫
Jiren decides to expel Goku, but at the moment of the attack, the latter dodges thanks to the passage to Ultra Instinct for the third time. Kakarot is able to dodge Jiren's blows and begins to fight back. The confrontation is fierce, the arena is destroyed even more, storms are unleashed. 🔥
The fight lasts a long time and Belmod orders Jiren not to waste any more time, he absolutely must finish off Goku . Jiren increases his power level and propels the saiyan from the main arena. He then lands on a small isolated portion below. Jiren sends him a real deluge of blows from his height. Goku protects himself from this rain of rapid punches with a shield and suffers, while concentrating. Kakarot is trapped, on the edge of the precipice and can't even teleport to escape from this bad situation. Universe 11 rejoices because victory is now inevitable. However, Toppo notices small sparks amid the barrage of punches. This means that Goku has gone on the offensive and is returning attacks . The shockwaves are powerful and suddenly, Goku propels an attack through the hail of fire. Jiren takes a huge blow to the stomach and retreats to the main arena. Incredible blue energy extends all the way down the arena, representing Goku's energy. ✨
Kakarot's heat increases, reaching maximum power. This will trigger a smile from Jiren for the very first time. He therefore decides to respond at full strength and charges a devastating attack in order to end the fight. However, as the terrible ball of energy arrives at Goku, the saiyan swoops down on his prey at the speed of light, captures Jiren's attack and reduces it to nothing. Goku finally achieved full mastery of Ultra Instinct. Jiren takes several salvos. The fight resumes again and Goku will have a huge advantage over his opponent. Although Jiren's power is greater than that of a God of Destruction, Goku fights in the vastly superior Angelic State. It is the latter which will allow him to largely defeat Jiren . 👊
After an intense fight, Jiren is about to lose, Goku prepares a final Kamehameha. However, the Ultra Instinct stops because it is too difficult to maintain over time, Goku collapses to the ground, victim of the painful side effects. Jiren is very respectful and reluctantly prepares to kick him out of the ring .
THE END OF AN EPIC: JIREN AGAINST THE GOKU – FREEZER DUO
As Jiren prepares to finish off Goku , an attack from behind surprises him. Frieza reappears, determined to defeat him. It is joined shortly afterwards by C17 . Jiren is weakened from his fight with Goku and he will have to be very careful with these two new adversaries. 🤔
Jiren states that he cannot be defeated despite being outnumbered. Frieza points out that he is no longer as powerful as before and makes fun of his past. This triggers a fury in Jiren and the powerful warrior responds with numerous blows. C17 manages to trap Jiren in a sphere of energy and launches a very violent explosion at him. Jiren falls to his knees, visibly defeated. Frieza advances to finish him off... The champion's morale seems damaged, he accepts defeat. Frieza charges a death ray to finish him off. Toppo encourages Jiren , he gives him the strength to get up and explode his rage once and for all. It is indeed anger that will wake Jiren up. A huge explosion of rage and ferocity allows him to break free and summon a powerful devastating attack around him. C17 and Frieza try to counter this wave of energy, but they will not be able to hold it back for long. 💥
Goku gets up and once again, goes beyond his limits to help his two colleagues. It amuses Jiren to see that the saiyan still finds the strength to face him once again. He increases his energy to sweep away all three of them. The energy barrier explodes and the final battle will begin...
Jiren sees a Goku – Frieza duo charging towards him. He rushes straight towards them to fight them. The three fighters take turns taking a lot of damage. Jiren struggles against Goku and Frieza's perfectly timed attacks. The two fighters from Universe 7 trust each other blindly and this gives life to an infernal combo, very difficult to stop. C17 supports them by sending bursts of energy. 🔥
Goku helps Frieza launch himself at full speed at Jiren. The champion of universe 11 absorbs the blow and begins to move dangerously towards the edge of the arena, into the void. He manages to divert Frieza's trajectory towards a platform located on the edge of the void. However, Goku rushes to support Frieza and drags them towards the exit. Once faced with the void, Frieza and Goku find the strength to explode their energy in order to put an end to it for good. Shortly before the end, Jiren understands how trust can be a deadly weapon . 👍
The three fighters are knocked out of the ring and C17 remains the only one standing in the arena. Jiren joins his colleagues on the sidelines. The high priest announces the total destruction of Universe 11. Toppo thanks Jiren for his fight. Son Goku comes to meet him before the end and asks him for revenge in the future. Jiren smiles , understanding that this won't be the end, that Shenron's wish will most likely be to rebuild the losing universes. Then, Jiren and all of Universe 11 are wiped out . 😥
Jiren disappears, as does the entire Universe 11.
THE RESURRECTION
C17 asks Shenron to restore the destroyed universes as before, as King Zeno had planned. This resurrects Jiren as well as the entirety of Universe 11. 🥳
During a discussion with Toppo, he realizes that a bond of friendship and trust was established between the two fighters during the tournament. Jiren accepts this and states that in the future, Universe 11 will triumph over Universe 7.

HOW POWERFUL IS JIREN?
Jiren is undoubtedly one of the most powerful mortals in all universes combined. We don't know at this time what kind of fighter the universes that didn't participate in the battle royal are resealing. However, as we saw previously, Jiren has visibly surpassed his universe's God of Destruction . An absolutely unique thing in short. 💪
Jiren gained this strength almost on his own. This is certainly one of the most incredible things about this character, because even Goku needed many masters to reach his level. Jiren has never lost a single battle outside of the Survival Tournament. He refused the position to become the god of destruction of his universe. ⚡
Regarding his fighting style, Jiren adopts a fairly defensive posture. He likes to take the time to analyze his opponents. It nevertheless intervenes when a warrior becomes powerful, as is the case with Kale or Goku Ultra Instinct. When he goes on the offensive , he is simple and effective, using numerous punches. Usually this is enough to finish off any opponent. 🤜
Against insignificant enemies, Jiren doesn't really need to fight, just his gaze is enough. When he starts to fight a little more seriously, he delivers blows with extreme speed. However, Jiren does not have the level to hold up against Ultra Instinct which, remember, is similar to the combat level of angels. The Kiai : This attack consists of sending a burst of ki in order to repel multiple targets. When Jiren uses it against Goku Blue, he manages to stop him without much effort.
Power Impact : This is Jiren's signature technique. He shoots an orange-red ball, similar to a fireball. Although initially small, it increases in size upon impact. Jiren uses this fighting technique to stop Kale's rampage.
Counter-Impact : As the name suggests, this is a counter-attack where Jiren blocks his opponent to teleport towards him. He summons a sphere of ki at the same time which electrifies the prey then explodes.
Colossal Cut : Jiren gathers energy in his hands and then combines them into an incredible sphere of ki. He lifts it to throw it towards his enemy.
Overheating Magnetron : Jiren charges at his opponent using a barrage of punches. He hits a Power Impact afterward.
Omega Heat Magnetron : This is his ultimate energy wave that he uses when he is in rage mode, at the end of the tournament. Jiren deploys an intense fire of burning heat.
