WHO CREATED BROLY?
This legendary character was originally created by Takao Koyama . The idea was to design a particularly powerful and threatening Saiyan villain. He wanted to be inspired by the form of Super Trunks during the Cell saga. ✏
Regarding the name, Takao wanted to follow the usual trend of giving vegetable names to Saiyan characters. Broly is therefore a pun on broccoli, while his father Paragus is inspired by asparagus. 🥦
Interestingly, Broly has never been seen with a monkey tail. In Dragon Ball Super, the explanation is given to us by Paragus. His son tended to be much too devastating during full moon nights, so he decided to cut off his tail to avoid transforming into an Oozaru (giant monkey). 🐵

BROLY APPEARANCE

The first, the most famous, is the one found in the film Broly the Super Warrior , released in the 90s. This excellent OAV features the legendary super saiyan as the main antagonist. We will subsequently find it in almost all video games up to the present day. The second version of Broly is the one found in the film Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The two versions are very similar, since Akira Toriyama decided to take almost the same story of the character. The most recent Broly is therefore the most canonical from a storyline point of view. Regarding his appearance, Broly is a saiyan with rather light skin, dark eyes and fairly long black hair. The latter are bristly up to the middle of the back. BROLY’S PERSONALITY
At first glance, Broly seems to be a rather docile and harmless saiyan, something which is contrary to the majority of saiyans. However, Broly possesses an unpredictable dual nature. Paragus' flashback tells us, when he briefly wakes up and asks his father what he is up to, he ends up getting angry when he realizes he wants to place the Crown of Control on his head . When transitioning into an aggressive state, Broly excels in combat and brutality. The result is much more destructive than the majority of other saiyans. This violent and maniacal side stems from his extraordinary power , which he never really learned to control. This also comes from the traumatic events of his birth. These moments of madness and frenzy occur more and more frequently and last a long time as he grows. The consequence ? He will gouge out his father's left eye. 👁
Largely due to his insanity , Broly is also known to become hysterical when he causes destruction or goes into a frenzy state. This is shown very well in Paragus' flashback where we see Broly, after destroying a cityscape as a child, laughing uncontrollably. Broly also seems to have a real problem controlling his rage , meaning he could end up destroying himself. In an effort to control his erratic behavior, Paragus used a device to control Broly's temper. 😨
Broly's most characteristic trait is his intense hatred for Goku . When they were both newborns, Goku's incessant crying greatly irritated the neighboring Broly, sparking hatred that would grow unconsciously and awaken at the sight of Goku. It is implied that the reason for his hatred of Goku is that he subconsciously associated Goku's incessant crying with the horrible things he later had to endure, such as narrowly surviving the execution and for narrowly escaping the destruction of planet Vegeta. So he blamed Goku for these things. 😠
It is for this reason that he often shouts Goku's Saiyan name, " Kakarot ", in an exclamatory manner. Although he usually addresses Goku by his Saiyan name, he has called him by his Earth name twice, both times during their fight on New Planet Vegeta. However, despite his hatred of Goku, the Japanese version of the film implies that he respects Goku's resolve to try to stop him, even though the chances of succeeding are low. He calls him and the other Z-Fighters "worthy of their Saiyan blood". 💪
It is implied that Broly has a similarly low opinion of Vegeta. In the Japanese version, Vegeta regains enough bravery to try to attack Broly, the latter coldly stating that he does not intend to let Vegeta have an easy kill against him.
In the second film, his defeat against Goku as well as his deep wounds completely cause him to lose his mind. His speech is now limited to yelling “ Kakarot ”. He even mistakes Goten for baby Goku even though he had just met him 7 years ago. He mistakes Gohan and Goten for Kakarot. 😅
The only part of his mind that seems intact is his sadistic desire for revenge against Goku.

BIOGRAPHY OF BROLY
A PAINFUL CHILDHOOD
Broly was born in the year 737 , during the period of extreme tension between Frieza and the Saiyans. At his birth, his most curious characteristic is his power level estimated at 10,000. This anomaly means that from birth, Broly's power was already close to that of Bardock and King Vegeta at the time of their death. In the Saiyan delivery room where he then rests, Broly is tormented by the constant crying of his neighbor, Kakarot. Kakarot's crying affected Broly's psychological state of mind , causing him to hold a subconscious grudge. The two infants would not meet again for almost three decades. ⏳
King Vegeta feared the threat the boy posed to his empire, so he gave the order to execute the infant . Broly's father, Paragus, begged the king to spare the child's life, attesting that his son could be an extremely valuable asset to the ruler. King Vegeta was quick to point out that even if this is true, the fact remains that Broly could use his insane strength to overthrow the royal family. King Vegeta ends the argument by sentencing Paragus to death , by shooting him with a wave of energy. Broly is then stabbed in the chest and left for dead with Paragus. 🗡
When Planet Vegeta is destroyed, Broly wakes up and uses his powers to protect himself and his father. Ironically, the destruction of Planet Vegeta had been orchestrated by Frieza for the exact same reason King Vegeta had tried to execute Broly earlier: Out of fear that the legendary Super Saiyan would rise up and topple him. Broly then stays with his father while Paragus plots revenge against King Vegeta and the royal family. 👑
Subsequently, Broly's behavior became increasingly manic and erratic as he grew up, due to his power and the traumatic events of his early childhood. One of the consequences of this development was when Broly punched Paragus and left him blind in his left eye. 👁
Although he begins to fear for his own safety, Paragus refuses to kill Broly, so he uses a ring as a special control device to keep Broly under control . Paragus barely manages to survive placing the ring. After succeeding, Paragus launches a plan to use Earth as a base of operations and take revenge on Vegeta by luring him to a planet doomed to be destroyed by a giant comet. ☄
During this time, he also used Broly to destroy the remaining planets in the Southern Zone, which was the main cause of King Kaio becoming aware of the disturbances in the universe. The latter logically contacted Goku to inform him of the threat.

BROLY IN DRAGON BALL Z
FIRST APPEARANCE: “BROLY THE LEGENDARY SUPER SAIYAN”
Broly initially appears to be a calm and gentle saiyan. His personality will change drastically when his ring is removed. He accompanies Vegeta to the planet Todokama, ironically in search of the legendary super saiyan.
When Goku arrives at Paragus' palace by teleporting, Broly begins to fill with rage . His father can't calm him down. The legendary saiyan attacks Goku because he goes into a blind rage. Following this, Goku understands that Brolu is responsible for the attack on the southern galaxy. The battle ends when Paragus manages to calm his son using his control system. 💥
When Vegeta attempts to leave the planet with the others and Paragus' plan is exposed, Broly begins walking towards Goku and says his name in rage. His tiara is destroyed and he transforms into a Legendary Super Saiyan , freeing himself from Paragus' control. Vegeta is completely shaken by his ki and Broly begins to fight Goku and his friends. Enraged and unleashed because of his madness , he dominates Goku, Gohan and Future Trunks. Eventually, Piccolo makes an appearance on the battlefield, but he too provides little help in the face of Broly's incredible power. Soon after, Vegeta dispels his fear and awe by joining the fight, only to be quickly outclassed. 😫
While our heroes are defeated, Broly attacks Paragus who is trying to escape the planet. The legendary Saiyan wants to prevent him from regaining control over him . Meanwhile, Goku asks his friends to channel all their energy into him. Vegeta is the last to accept. Goku now manages to punch him back. 🤛
The two Saiyans charge at each other as the planet begins to crumble beneath their feet. Broly punches Goku and misses, while Kakarot lands a powerful blow to Broly's abdomen. Broly's green ki bursts at the point of impact and his skin appears to crack from the green light emitted from his body. Broly then screams in astonishment and explodes, seemingly defeated. 💥
THE RETURN OF BROLY
True to his prediction, Broly manages to survive his defeat against Goku. He escapes at the last minute in a space pod, while the planet is being destroyed. The pod is heading towards Earth. Once there, Broly falls into a 7-year coma. He will wake up because of Goten's repeated screams. 🥱
After escaping from this tomb, Broly becomes much more powerful thanks to this near-death experience. Remember, every time a Saiyan comes close to death, he hardens and gains strength. Broly therefore decides to start a vendetta against Goku's friends, particularly his sons Goten and Gohan. He confuses the three saiyans because his mental health is seriously affected. He will also attack Videl and Trunks . 🤛
Gohan discovers the legendary Super Saiyan on the scene. His outburst is uncontrolled and his attacks fail. He eventually falls victim to a Kamehameha fired by Gohan, Goten and Goku's spirit. His heart explodes after shouting " Kakarot " one last time. 💥
Broly's OVA story ends like this. Until the character was definitively canonized thanks to the final Dragon Ball Super film. The Saiyan will be entitled to a “reboot”, while retaining many similarities with the original.
DRAGON BALL SUPER: BROLY

The fight resumes and it is now a duel between Super Broly and Gogeta 4 SSJ Blue. Without real surprise, it is Gogeta who takes the upper hand quite easily. During an Ultimate Kamehameha attack, Broly is teleported to his home planet, which will save him from the devastating attack. 💥
At the end of the film, Goku visits him offering him food and a home. Our hero only wants one thing, to be able to train with Broly . This opponent is big enough to face him and progress.

HOW POWERFUL IS BROLY?
In OAV films.
Before Broly is revealed as the Legendary Super Saiyan, Paragus claims that Broly's power level is weaker than his own , which Future Trunks earlier confirmed, citing the latter as being a "toothpick" in comparison. . However, his base form may indeed be weaker than Paragus', at least at the time he wore the crown. Broly's ki, in his Super Saiyan form, was strong enough to be barely noticeable on King Kaio's planet while he wreaked havoc in the Southern Galaxy. ☄
Then, once in his Legendary Super Saiyan form, it is heavily implied that he is powerful enough to wipe out the southern galaxy single-handedly, leaving only a few planets and stars. In his ultimate form, nothing can stop him and his strength is immeasurable.
When in his Legendary Super Saiyan form, he is stronger than Goku and Gohan in their Super Saiyan forms, Future Trunks and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan 2 forms, and Super Piccolo. He easily beats all five of them. Even when Piccolo and Goku both barrage Broly with punches and kicks, Broly takes no damage. Perhaps most striking is the fact that he deliberately took a point-blank Super Kamehameha from Goku SSJ2, and not only emerged unscathed, but also laughed at the attack , even going so far as to sarcastically ask Goku what the attack was supposed to be. 😨
The fact that Broly was able to take attacks from Super Saiyan Goku without any damage meant that he was at least twice as strong as Goku . His physical strength in this form was also enough to effortlessly crush Paragus' attack, which was heavily armored, and then launch it off the planet.
However, channeling ki from exhausted base form Gohan, Vegeta, Future Trunks, and Piccolo into Goku proves superior to Broly in his Legendary Super Saiyan form. When Goku is significantly powered by ki, Broly also expresses some shock and awe at the increase in this unexpected power. Although this was short-lived, even confidently stating that no matter how much power the other Z-Fighters gave Goku, it wouldn't be enough to kill him. Vegeta claims that he is the most powerful Saiyan in all of history . Although unconfirmed, it is possible that his Legendary Super Saiyan form was more powerful than Gohan's Super Saiyan 2 form at the time, as Goku caused Gohan to flee when Broly threatened him while he was already in Super Saiyan 2 form. ✨
Additionally, Broly has also shown exceptional endurance , being able to survive severe injuries that would normally have killed anyone.
